Greencomputer Innovation's PowerElf II security appliance is aimed at satisfying the needs of small business through an all-in-one "unified threat management" device that costs less than $2,000.

Because small and midsize businesses often have limited capital to spend on technology and IT staff, they are often slower to adapt to new technology, such as UTM appliances. Nonetheless, they have security concerns similar to those of their larger, better-heeled cousins. The PowerElf II server appliance is directly targeted at those customers. The product provides a firewall, IDS, Web and e-mail services, optional antivirus, antispam and file storage at a cost the company hopes will appeal to the SMB market.

Greencomputer's servers can be custom-configured by the customer at the manufacturer's Web site (http://www.greencomputer.com).
