FUDBusters: Let's Cut the Protectionism Instead
The U.S. federal government is limiting temporary visas, and it's hurting high-tech.

FUDBust: If H1-B visa limits really were about national security, the entire program would be scrapped. The politics of protectionism are at play here. Unemployment among U.S. computer engineers is up--though only slightly above the national rate--so there's pressure to keep foreigners out. But the high-tech industry has benefited enormously from the H1-B program, and the government's artificial limits are hurting many companies. Politics aside, if we can attract more bright, creative, driven people to U.S. industry, they will help create more job opportunities for everyone. As Gates lamented during a panel session at the Library of Congress: "The theory behind the H1-B visa limits--that too many smart people are coming--that's what's questionable."
