Gateway on Tuesday launched a new two-way server and a Serial ATA (SATA) disk array in its continuing effort to appeal to back office hardware buyers, not just consumers and businesses after desktop PCs.

The 1U-format rack-mounted Gateway 9415 server, which is designed for database or Web server chores, supports up to two Intel 64-bit Xeon processors, can pack as much as 8GB of memory, and provides three hot-swappable SCSI drive bays to accommodate as much as 900GB of internal storage.

Prices for the 9415, which runs Microsoft Windows, Novell Netware 6.5, Red Hat Linux Enterprise 3.0 and 3.0 EM64T, and SuSE Linux Enterprise 9.0 and 9.0 EM64T, start at $1,199. It comes with six cooling fans and can be optionally equipped with a hot-swap, redundant, load-sharing power subsystem.

Gateway's 840 SAN disk array is a 2U-format enclosure that can accommodate as many as a dozen SATA drives, with the option of Fibre Channel support to link the array to others, and to the network. The integrated RAID controller supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10, and 50.

Priced starting at $4,499 in a 750GB-capacity configuration, the 840 can be daisy-chained with up to three others to boost total storage into the 19.2TB range. Both the 9415 server and the 840 array are available now from Gateway's Web site.
