The 20 largest cable and DSL providers in the U.S. acquired 2.6 million new subscribers in the third quarter, bringing the total of broadband subscribers to more than 40 million, a report said Monday.

The Leichtman Research Group (LRG) said cable now has some 23.2 million subscribers to 17 million subscribers with DSL broadband.
