Motorola To Power Up Cable IP Systems

Motorola, Inc. announced today that it has acquired technology from San Diego-based Broadband Innovations, Inc. that it will use to further develop its cable modem termination system (CMTS) and channel bonding solutions.

By acquiring Broadband Innovations' radio frequency (RF) technologies, Motorola expects to add greater RF channel density, throughput, and more effective channel management to its CMTS product line, while also adding a highly fault-tolerant RF matrix switch. According to Motorola, the new technology will allow its Modular CMTS components to process more signals at once, enabling advanced services like high-speed data, channel bonding, commercial services, and video-over-IP.

"Motorola's newly acquired innovations, combined with our already strong portfolio of next-generation network solutions, will help enable cable service providers to efficiently deliver highly-compelling entertainment and communications applications to the connected homes of their customers," Motorola corporate vice president and general manager, Connected Home Solutions Charles Dougherty said in a statement. "We are pleased to add exceptional engineering talent and highly innovative intellectual property to our Connected Home team."

Currently in development by CableLabs, Modular CMTS is designed to allow service providers to scale their advanced services more effectively as they consolidate multiple delivery systems to a single IP network infrastructure.
