Data Domain introduces appliance for remote offices
February 20, 2008
SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Data Domain (Nasdaq: DDUP), the leading provider of deduplication storage systems for enterprise disk backup and network-based disaster recovery, today announced that it is now shipping the Data Domain DD120, the industrys smallest full-function deduplication storage system designed to deliver cost-effective remote office data protection to broadly distributed enterprises. With the new DD120, Data Domain extends the full capabilities of its data center class systems, including replication, management and support for backup and nearline data, to remote sites. This announcement spotlights Data Domain’s focus on large enterprises who wish to deploy ultra-reliable, automated multi-site remote disaster recovery (DR), disk-based backup/restore and global tape consolidation from core to edge.
The new low-end DD120 system provides up to 150 GB/hour of inline deduplicated storage throughput and up to 18 TB of logical capacity in a 1U chassis. In addition, each DD120 is conveniently packaged with the Data Domain Replicator software to enable remote site protection. This means DD120 systems are designed specifically to replicate data from remote locations to a data center hub for consolidated tape operations and off-site disaster recovery (DR). Running the same operating system software as all other Data Domain systems, the DD120 includes field-proven automated data replication, data deduplication, enterprise management and data invulnerability functionality for extended on-site and off-site retention and recovery. The DD120 offers easy integration by supporting backup and nearline applications as a CIFS or NFS fileserver, or using the new Symantec Veritas NetBackup OpenStorage (OST) interface.
The DD120 complements all Data Domain systems including the DDX Array Series which can act as a hub for recovery images vaulted efficiently from up to 320 smaller sites. With Data Domain’s market leading deduplicated replication technology, network bandwidth efficiency is increased by up to 99% during automated replication of backup and archive data sets, making it cost-effective to replicate the data across a WAN. Additionally, the Data Domain Replicator software efficiently deduplicates data across multiple sites prior to sending data over the network to a hub location making DD120 installations even more bandwidth-efficient.
Steve Duplessie, Sr. Analyst at The Enterprise Strategy Group, Inc. said "Data Domain is extending their reach - enabling the largest customers to now put this technology out at the remote offices, and enabling a simple, easy way to consolidate all corporate data back to a central location - without breaking the bank."
“The DD120 offers a low cost way to simply and automatically backup and recover locally as well as replicate remotely, for less than was possible before,” said Brian Biles, VP of Product Management at Data Domain. “This is a great new option for distributed enterprise sites who would normally consider a tape autoloader but hate the hassle. They no longer have to make sure they have an administrator to replace the tapes and get them on a truck on time—those days are over. With the DD120, storage and transport are automated, and management can be centralized.”Data Domain Inc.
