VMware Unveils Upgrade

VMware Inc. today unveiled new products and services aimed at tapping data center trends in storage and processing. (See VMware Intros Products and VMware Adds New Services.)

In storage, VMware's ESX Server will now be compatible with network attached storage (NAS) and iSCSI. Though iSCSI only accounts for a small proportion of the storage networking market, the technology is attracting a great deal of interest from users wrestling with interoperability issues. VMware also has extended support for x86 processors in the new version of ESX Server in a bid to support the latest dual-core chips. Users are eyeing multi-core chips as a way to boost performance and reduce power consumption. (See Intel Pushes Xeon and HPC Users Mull Licensing Issues.)
