WALTHAM, Mass. -- Q1 Labs, a leading network security management company, surveyed over 200 companies to learn how they are managing network security today and the technology directions they want for the future. When compared to a similar survey taken in November of 2004, several trends become apparent:

The convergence of network and security organizations has continued with more people now reporting to converged organizations. The findings indicated that 31% say the responsibility for network security resides in the networking organization alone, up from 20%, while shared responsibility for security and networking has increased from 28% in 2004 to 35% now. Those companies where security responsibility lies with the security group alone held fairly steady at 20% in 2004 and 23% now.

This organizational convergence is reflected in a desire for enterprise-wide approaches to threat monitoring and management. When asked whether it is important to combine network behavior monitoring and security information monitoring in one solution, a resounding 70% agreed while only 8% disagreed. Market confusion may have driven the 22% who expressed no opinion. Clearly there is room for growth in the market. Responding companies indicated they are using either SIEM (11%) or Network Monitoring (28%) products to protect their networks.
