NEC Europe Ltd. Friday unveiled a combination biometric user ID product for authentication between a NEC laptop PC with a built-in fingerprint reader and a NEC 3G mobile phone.

Demonstrated at the CeBIT trade show in Germany, the authentication system also relies on a mobile SIM card.

"The benefits for users are secure access to the office LAN from anywhere with no tokens or passwords," the NEC announcement read. "This solution works with a vast number of off-the-shelf applications like VPN, SSL authentication, and Windows Logon. It results in a better user experience."
