FREMONT, Calif. -- 3PAR (NYSE Arca: PAR), the leading global provider of utility storage, announced today its 2008 Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative and published results from its 2007 program, which 3PAR estimates to have reduced carbon emissions equivalent to removing 2,300 cars from the road for the entire year. 3PAR’s Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to green technology and is aimed at continuing the reduction of energy consumption and the environmental impact of storage in the datacenter.

3PAR’s Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative, the first of its kind when introduced last year, has achieved tremendous results in its first year. Through this program, 3PAR has purchased carbon credits to offset 4,367 metric tons of CO2 emissions, allowing 3PAR customers to deploy storage capacity that is effectively 100% carbon neutral. In addition, last year 3PAR awarded three of its customers--IAC, Edelman, and CACI--with the "Think Thin, Think Green" award and 1,000 additional carbon offsets in recognition of their capacity-saving efforts and green storage practices.

Between the reduction of disk capacity and the purchase of carbon offsets through both the 2007 Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative and "Think Thin, Think Green" awards, 3PAR estimates that its efforts in 2007 amounted to reducing CO2 emissions by 12,000 metric tons--the equivalent of taking 2,300 cars off the road for an entire year. In 2007 alone, 3PAR customers are estimated to have replaced approximately 11,000 terabytes of traditional capacity with just 4,367 terabytes of thin storage capacity by deploying 3PAR Thin Provisioning and thin copy technologies such as 3PAR Virtual Copy and 3PAR Remote Copy.

3PAR’s 2007 Carbon Neutral Storage Initiative funded the purchase of carbon credits to offset energy consumption associated with each terabyte of 3PAR Thin Provisioning capacity purchased from January through December of last year. 3PAR Thin Provisioning is a green storage technology that enables customers to support a given amount of useable capacity with only a fraction of the physical storage required by traditional arrays. Organizations deploying 3PAR Thin Provisioning and related thin copy technologies offered by 3PAR are able to dramatically reduce not only the cost of capacity, power, and cooling, but also the environmental impact associated with their storage.

"The reason that 3PAR’s carbon neutral storage program has been so effective is that it’s not just a marketing initiative," said Tom Trainer, Managing Partner at Evaluator Group. "3PAR has combined its green storage technologies like thin provisioning with a popular means of offsetting carbon emissions to effectively tackle a growing issue in the datacenter. In doing so, they have put green storage on the map."3PAR Inc.
