OK, we have actual numbers and some direction from Novell; the company says that Linux will be its focus, and that its consulting arm Celerant is likely to be spun off to get some of the cost savings that Wall Street wants to see. Fine, as far as it goes; Linux is the right focus. But new president Ron Hovespian has also confirmed that 600 people are going to be laid off across the company's operations. That's not the 20% figure that had surfaced in news reports earelier this week, but it's still a pretty bloody hack into Novell's core (about 12% of total staff). And if the company can't get the financials turned around over the next year or so, this won't be the end. Does that make you feel all comfy about committing to SUSE Linux for your server platform?
