5:30 PM -- China appears hell-bent on being a major technology player, and storage seems like a good fit.

With a population of 1.3 billion, China has an immense internal market, which Lenovo has already used as a launch-pad for its PC business. Could a Chinese vendor use the same model to sell commodity storage hardware such as disks and tape?

This, apparently, is a very real possibility. Chinese technology giant Huawei, for example, recently told Byte and Switch that storage and security are key focus areas for the company.
