Indian Government Urged To Adopt IPv6

BANGALORE, India — The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India issued its draft recommendations on Tuesday (Dec. 20) for India's transition to IPv6.

The agency said deploying IPv6 would expand the available IP address space and provide better service, mobility support and security. All are needed as Internet usage increases and, with it, demand for IP address space.

In August, the agency issued a paper on migrating to IPv6. Since then, it has received stakeholders' comments on the transition. This week's recommendations incorporate those comments and seek additional input.

The agency said it wants to establish test beds with government funding to experiment with IPv6 technologies. It also called for creating a National Internet Registry.

It also said the definition of an IP address needs to be amended to permit 128-bit addresses to be used for IPv6-based addressing.The government must also ensure IPv6 compatibility in its new systems and networks.
