Opsware Tuesday released a preview version of its Opsware System 4.0 data center automation software that runs on Linux.

With the release, said Opsware, enterprises can now run the software on Linux servers to automatically provision, configure, manage, and patch Windows, Unix, and Linux servers distributed across multiple data centers.

Opsware System 4.0 allows IT administrators to access a slew of automated services via a point-and-click interface, including application provisioning and configuring, applying of security patches, and monitoring of the data center assets and their performance.

The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company also announced Tuesday that Hewlett-Packard would be the first major vendor to incorporate the new Linux software. HP will offer Opsware System 4.0 for Linux as an option in its HP Utility Data Center Solution.
