IP, VoIP Over Cable To Be Trialed At UMass

IP-based telephony services via a carrier class switch for cable telecommunications will be trailed at the University of Massachusetts (UMass) by Cedar Point Communications, which developed the voice-switching infrastructure called SAFARI C.

Announced Monday, Cedar Point said the solution will be deployed to a base of more than 30,000 users on the UMass campus, supporting SIP-based residential devices in dorms as well as TDM and VoIP applications in university offices.

The firm said its switch incorporates a brace of voice switching infrastructure components enabling users to avoid installing separate components like media gateways, Ethernet switches and signaling gateways.

Cedar Point said the SAFARI C will be tested for its capability of replacing existing PBX and trunking technology used by the university's existing network. Working with the firm will be the UMASS Office of Information Technologies.
