Netgear has rolled out a new Ethernet switch aimed at small- and midsize enterprises that want to use a single cable to connect equipment to the network and to power those devices.

The new Netgear ProSafe switches rely on Power-over-Ethernet (PoE), which uses one Ethernet cable to deliver network access and electrical power to PoE devices including IP phones, wireless access points, surveillance cameras and other devices. POE lets smaller IT shops streamline their physical infrastructure, simplify management and potentially cut cabling costs.Netgear's new ProSafe 24-port 10/100 Smart Switch includes four gigabit ports and 24 PoE ports and a 195-watt power budget. It's packaged with a number security and QoS features, such as IGMP snooping, rate limiting and DSCP-based prioritization. The switch offers gigabit copper/SFP slots for fiber cabling and two 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet ports. The switch can be configured and managed through any SNMP-based management system including ProSafe's Network Management software.

The ProSafe, which lists for $630, is available now.
