Cemaphore Systems, specialists in e-mail backup for Exchange environments, is introducing MailShadowG, which provides Exchange-like syncing services without using Exchange.According to Cemaphore, "MailShadowG allows you to synchronize your Outlook client with web-based email service providers like Google?s Gmail. This effectively turns Outlook into a universal front end client for different email systems, reducing infrastructure costs dramatically and making email backup portable and affordable." The software supposedly will sync e-mail, contacts, and calendar items via Outlook.

So far, the system only works with Gmail, but eventually, the company claims, "MailShadowG can enable any external email service providers to act as a Microsoft Exchange server." The beta version is free to try out and eventually will be licensed with a monthly subscription fee that, the company claims, will be affordable to small businesses.PC Magazine, CNET News
