HTTP-based patch distribution reduces need to adjust firewall configurations risks associated with opening ports on network firewalls.

Configuresoft's latest version of Security Update Manager 2.5 (SUM), will allow enterprises to distribute patches and software updates across firewalls using the HTTP protocol, officials say.
This will eliminate the need to adjust firewall configurations when deploying patches to devices located outside of the network perimeter. It will also reduce risks associated with opening ports on network firewalls to deploy patches within an organization's DMZ.
By using HTTP, organizations can comply with their firewall policies while automating patching for devices and systems that are directly connected to the Internet.Other functionality in the new version includes integration with ECM Remote for automatic patching of mobile devices as soon as they log onto the network, automatic synchronization of remote patch distribution points, and enhanced reporting capability.
Company officials say that when Windows XP SP2 -- which enables the Windows Firewall by default -- is released, the ability to use HTTP to deliver patches will become important for client machines.
