Welcome to NWC's SOA Immersion Center. Here, we'll be analyzingnews, technology and products that affect one of the most misunderstood areas in IT. Though we'll look at application integration in general, we have a particular emphasis on Web services and similar messagingarchitectures.

This site will also explore other issues that affect SOA,including the role of the network and of IT itself. It will eventouch on Web 2.0, as Web services and SOA account for much of theinfrastructure behind rich Internet applications, and newtechnologies such as enterprisemashups claim to provide many of the same benefits as SOA. Andwe'll try to answer questions including:

  • Which products do you really need? SOA vendors are quicklybuying each other up, in a market where there was already alot of overlap between categories like management, governance, security and ESB. Some will fade away altogether, while othersbecome ubiquitous.

  • What's the relationship between SOA and Web 2.0? NetworkComputing surveys show that they are perhaps the two mostdespised

buzzwordsin IT, but they have more in common that that. Are theycomplementary or competitive?

  • What kinds of building blocks will future compositeapplications be constructed from? Initiatives like servicescomponent architecture aim to do something like SOA withinapplications, while virtualizationmakes servers themselves more flexible. Can some server functionsbetter be handled bySaaS or even inhardware?

  • Which of the alphabetsoup of Web services standards really matter? Most users of thebig public Web services seem to ignore them in favor of REST orad-hoc XML, but will that change as structured information sharingbecomes more important?

We don’t have the answers to all of these just yet, but staytuned. And if you have any thoughts, please comment here. You canalso get in touch with me by email at [email protected].
