Now You See Me...
What would you give to be invisible for a day?
May 26, 2006
2:30 PM -- If you have ever fantasized about being invisible for a day (come on, who hasn't?), then dream no more. Harry Potter's invisibility cloak may be about to make the leap from science fiction to science fact, at least according to the BBC.
Cone-heads on both sides of the Atlantic, apparently, are devoting some serious brain power to devising a cloaking device, potentially making light waves flow around an object in the same way that water does -- and rendering the object undetectable to radar and other kinds of monitoring gear.
This conjures up images of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, not to mention the myopic boy wizard. But the military uses of the technology are self-evident, and reports suggest that the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency(DARPA) has placed its not insubstantial weight behind the scheme.
What's next? Teletransportation? We will just wait and see (or maybe not).
