Optical Networking Week in Review

The optical networking business continues showing signs of health, evidenced by introduction of new products and acceptance by customers.

Among the technologies that made headlines this week: Fiber-to-the-Premises (FTTP) distribution systems from ADC, a DWDM optical transport platform from Nortel, optical splicers from Sumitomo Electric Lightwave and an optical network terminal from Hitachi.

Test and measurement equipment provider Acterna announced a new device that provides wander generation and analysis for 10 Gbps and 10.7 Gbps systems. The enhanced Acterna ONT-50 Optical Network Tester combined with the new 10/10.7 Gbps module enables measurements of wander parameters during installation, during operation, and after changes in network topology.

Carriers are stepping up their deployments of optical systems. USCarrier Telecom, LLC reported that it has successfully deployed the FLASHWAVE 7420 metro DWDM platform to enable the carrier to roll out its new E-Max 1000 Long Haul Wholesale Ethernet service to carrier customers planning to deploy broadband services in the southeastern United States. The deployment was carried out by Fujitsu Network Communications Inc., which is an OEM and marketing partner of ADVA Optical Networking, which developed the DWDM platform. The USCarrier deployment also includes ADVA's Erbium Doped Fiber Amplifier modules.

ADVA also recently teamed with TGC Global to deploy ADVA's Fiber Service Platform at the United Nations Federal Credit Union. The deployment delivers scalable, high-speed Ethernet services between four locations in the metropolitan New York area.
