Palm is offering a patch for the Treo 680 to fix a bug that can reduce battery life when the smartphone's camera is used.

Without the fix, the device's camera may continue to draw power when the smartphone is in standby mode. The patch, released this week, is for all versions of the Treo 680.

The update is available for over-the-air download directly to the device. Other options include downloading it to a Mac or PC, and then synchronizing the device with the computer to transfer the update. IT departments can use an expansion card to deploy the fix to multiple devices.

To test whether the update was successful, Treo 680 users can press applications, menu, info and then version, which will be at the bottom of screen. If the phone lists CameraLib-camL v.3.1, then the update was installed successfully.
