Qualcomm Inc. has chosen IBM computers and the Linux operating system to run a wide variety of wireless applications that include mobile e-mail and messaging, games and ring tones, IBM said Tuesday.
The deal includes 200 IBM eServer x335 systems using Intel Corp.'s Xeon microprocessors. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The servers, which are running Red Hat Linux version 7.3, are linked together into computing grids. Qualcomm, a San Diego-based cellular phone maker, implemented the system with the help of IBM partner Direct Systems Support, also headquartered in San Diego.
