4:30 PM -- Storage companies spend hours describing themselves to customers and prospects, to the press, and to investors. So how come they can't do better when describing themselves in print?
Like other Business 101 graduates, I know the difference between a descriptor and a mission statement. But given the descriptions most storage outfits give on their Websites and in press releases, I'd hate to read the long version.

_______, the leading provider of complete, enterprise-class iSCSI storage area network (SAN) solutions.
_______, the award winning market leader for professional data archival solutions.
To further illustrate, below is a quiz. We've listed real company descriptors taken from recent press releases and from the Websites of some household-name storage suppliers, as well as some high-profile startups. They are in no particular order. Can you guess who they are?
_______, the leading developer of proven data protection solutions.
_______ is a technology solutions provider to consumers, businesses and institutions globally.
_______ is a world leader in unified storage solutions for today's data-intensive enterprise.
_______ is the world leader in products, services, and solutions for information storage and its management.
_______ delivers the industry's leading platforms and solutions for intelligently connecting, managing, and optimizing IT resources in shared storage environments.
_______ is the leading provider of storage networking solutions, helping customers build, globally connect, optimize and centrally manage data infrastructures across SAN, MAN and WAN environments

Judging from the above, the goal is to say as little as possible, while including the words "leading" and "solutions" as often as possible.
Here a richly compensated consultant adds, "It doesn't matter what you say, it's the impression you leave 'em with. We're about subliminal, dude!"
