Symantec, Sun Beef Up iForce Intrusion Detection Appliances

Symantec and Sun on Wednesday announced on Oct. 29 enhanced editions of Sun's iForce Intrusion Detection Appliance that now sport the most recent version of Symantec's ManHunt intrusion detection software and run on the faster Sun Fire V60x server.Now available in seven models -- compared to the quartet at the iForce appliance debut in April, 2003 -- the device relies on ManHunt 3.0 to protect against both known and unknown (so-called 'zero-day') attacks, defend against denial-of-service (DoS) attacks, and detect protocol anomalies. The original editions of the appliance used Symantec's ManHunt 2.2.

The appliance is based on Sun's Fire V60x server and runs a hardened edition of Sun's Solaris OS x86 Platform Edition.

Available in versions that handle traffic at speeds from 100Mbps to 2Gbps, prices for the refreshed appliances start at $12,500.
