Tandberg has introduced a new generation of telepresence products the company maintains will bring global videoconferencing meetings to a new level of intimacy and help trim executive travel costs.

Telepresence T3 includes standards-compliant video systems that can be quickly switched on to bring participants from multiple locations into a common user experience even when participants are on different networks with different bandwidths.

The system features full high-definition screens and PrecisionHD 1080p cameras, positioned for direct eye contact, that work to create the feeling that the participants are together in the same room. The company noted that its development team included a social anthropologist who collaborated with customer groups to help develop common user experiences, including Nordic sky blue walls and room lighting that creates a natural ambiance.

"Tandberg delivers a step change in telepresence through aesthetics and technology that heightens the sense of personal interaction while in a meeting," said Fredrik Halvorsen, Tandberg's CEO, in a statement. "Experts, suppliers, and frontline employees can be invited into a telepresence meeting from wherever they may be. This is the new way of working."

At the heart of the new system is the company's Telepresence Server, which enables users of standards-compliant video systems to quickly join shared meetings. The system and server allow users in multiple sites to see each other at the same time, while communicating through full-duplex spatial audio with wideband stereo sound. The company suggested that the new system will "break down the barrier between telepresence and videoconferencing."

Tandberg said the Telepresence Server will ship by January.
