Toshiba on Thursday introduced a new wireless-configured laptop that it's pitching to small- and mid-sized businesses on a budget.

The Satellite A40-S270 features a 2.8GHz Intel Pentium 4 processor, 512MB of memory, a 60GB hard drive, a DVD-ROM/CD-RW optical drive, and an integrated 10/100 Ethernet connection.

It also boasts built-in wireless connectivity that supports the 802.11g standard, said Toshiba, as well as four USB ports and an IEEE 1394 (FireWire) port for connecting to devices such as digital camcorders.

The $1,429 portable comes standard with Microsoft OneNote, the note-taking application that's part of the Office System lineup Microsoft rolled out last October.

Although the A40-S270 comes with Microsoft Works -- the Redmond, Wash.-developer's low-end productivity suite -- customers can opt for a pre-installed copy of Office Small Business Edition 2003 instead.
