WiMAX Forum To Address Global Regulatory Issues

WAYNE, N.J. — The WiMAX Forum announced Wednesday (June 2) that it has formed a regulatory working group in order to gain availability to spectrum for broadband wireless systems worldwide.

According to the Forum, the primary goal of the new working group is to ensure the availability of licensed and license-exempt spectrum by encouraging the worldwide, uniform adoption of specific frequency bands for broadband wireless access.

The working group also said it would work with regulators to develop flexible and technology neutral regulatory frameworks. It will also seek to allow usage models to evolve as the wireless market matures and enabling service providers to deploy the most appropriate solutions for their markets.

The group said initial global harmonization for broadband wireless access can be achieved in the licensed-exempt 5 GHz band as well as the licensed 3.5 and 2.5 GHz bands. The Forum will also work with world standards and regulatory bodies to advance the allocation of licensed and license-exempt spectrum in lower frequency bands, such as 700 MHz. B
