More interoperability options for enterprise instant messaging systems became available this week when Jabber Inc. announced a planned server-to-server gateway between its Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol(XMPP)-based Jabber XCP platform and the IBM version of Session Initiation Protocol for Instant Messaging and Presence Leveraging Extensions (SIMPLE) used in Lotus Instant Messaging.
The company said that the technology will provide the basis for additional XMPP-SIP interoperability releases from the company in the months to come.
Jabber President Tony Bamonti said that recent Microsoft Live Communications Server interoperability announcements are motivating people.
"Jabber, Inc. has long been committed to interoperability between the multiple IM protocols," he said, noting that the company has previously made similar technology available in the wireless SMS environment.
XMPP the only instant messaging and presence protocol so far approved by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF:. Jabber XCP is the leading commercial platform based upon the XMPP standard and boasts between 5 and 6 million licenses sold and deployed worldwide.
