OAKDALE, Minn. -- Already a proven innovator in tape cartridge protection with its ruggedized cartridge design for LTO (Linear Tape Open) Ultrium tapes, Imation Corp. (NYSE:IMN), a worldwide leader in removable data storage, today announced it is shipping its LTO Ultrium 2, 3 and 4 cartridges in new ultra-protective thermoform packaging.Imation's LTO Ultrium thermoform packaging is designed to offer superior tape cartridge protection during transport and handling -- dramatically reducing the potential for media contamination and enabling efficient unpacking and storage.

Made of environmentally friendly recycled polyethylene terephthalate (RPET) material, the durable and clean Imation thermoform packaging is designed to provide extra protection for LTO Ultrium cartridges, which now hold up to1.6 terabytes of critical data in a company's midrange and enterprise server environments.

  • Imation's new LTO Ultrium Thermoform packaging features:

  • Polyethylene construction -- Recycled RPET offers strong, thermo-stability characteristics critical during shipment. As a plastic, it doesn't shed like cardboard -- reducing the potential for media contamination.

  • Durable, form-fitted trays -- The design holds cartridges snugly in place during shipment, significantly reducing the amount of G-force reaching the cartridges should rough handling be encountered during transit. In addition, the trays nest together, stacking efficiently to optimize valuable floor space.

  • Faster unpacking -- Because thermoform packaging doesn't involve shrink wrap or cardboard inserts, unpacking is considerably faster and more efficient with a simple lift of the lid -- providing immediate access to cartridges.

  • Recycled and Recyclable materials -- The environmentally-friendly thermoform package is made from 30 percent post-consumer waste and can be recycled after use.

"With LTO 4 cartridges capable of holding up to 1.6 terabytes of data on a single cartridge, protection during shipment becomes even more critical,"said James Milligan, general manager, Commercial and OEM Division, Imation."Our LTO Ultrium Thermoform packaging complements our recent launch of LTO 4 cartridges featuring Imation's patented corner snap and three-piece spool technology -- offering more cartridge ruggedness. This new offering also enhances our data protection offerings, which includes the DataGuard(TM) Storage and Transport Case, to benefit businesses of all sizes that rely on LTO tape technology."
