MCI has announced a hosted data protection service designed to help businesses back up and restore critical company information.

Enhanced Smart Backup, an addition to MCI's Enterprise Hosting portfolio, is an alternative to traditional tape-based backup solutions, and uses disk-to-disk technology to more efficiently back up and restore data. The data is stored securely online, making it easy for customers to easily retrieve file or system restores on-demand.

The new service includes monitoring, security systems, and backup reporting and offers end-to-end data protection. MCI provides and manages the bi-coastal infrastructure, including redundant servers, storage arrays, IP network connectivity, operating systems and backup software.

"MCI is bringing next-generation hosting services to market that deliver greater value for our enterprise customers," Nancy Gofus, senior vice president of Product Management for MCI said in a statement. "MCI's Enhanced Smart Backup helps companies lower their total cost of ownership while tapping into new business continuity capabilities that far surpass traditional backup and restore solutions."
