Secure Computing SmartFilter Goes to School
Intelligent policy-based URL filtering solution blocks objectionable content while allowing access to educational sites

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Secure Computing Corporation (NASDAQ: SCUR), a leading enterprise gateway security company, today announced that Milton Town School District has selected the company’s SmartFilter®, Bess Edition to safeguard its students from inappropriate and malicious Internet content. The award-winning URL-filtering solution allows users at the Vermont schools to access educational content while restricting access to offensive sites, and also protects the district’s network from potentially dangerous files.
“Secure Computing’s SmartFilter does a superb job of filtering out the pages that are deemed ‘undesirable’ by our policy-makers, without using a ‘sledgehammer’ approach,” reported Fred Wadlington, Milton Town School District IT systems administrator.
SmartFilter’s flexible filtering technology allows for the level of protection to be adjusted depending on whether the user is a student or faculty member, and can even apply different filters based on the age of the student. Because Secure Computing designed Bess Edition specifically for schools and libraries, it also includes a unique “Exempt” feature that allows access to sites that fit into a particular category, even if they would otherwise be blocked. As a result, SmartFilter can prevent access to specific categories, for example “nudity,” unless it appears in a health or educational context.
SmartFilter also helps Milton Town School District comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). “We intentionally designed Bess Edition to be CIPA-compliant,” explained Tim Roddy, director of product marketing for Secure Computing. “Such compliance enables school districts to qualify for discounted Internet Service and computer equipment, and increases the overall return on investment.”
