Alcatel Gains In Edge Router Market

Alcatel is taking a significant market share in the global service provider edge IP router segment and continuing to strengthen its position in the MSWAN market, according to a new study by research firm Ovum-RHK,

The success is fuelled by triple play applications, Ethernet- and IP-based VPNs, and aggregation of broadband and mobile traffic. Alcatel jumped from securing 3% of the IP Edge router market the first quarter to 11% the second quarter of 2005, based on data provided by research firm Ovum-RHK. The data also shows that Alcatel jumped from taking 5% of the European IP edge router market the first quarter to 19% the second quarter. The increase is based on network deployments such as France Telecom, Telenet in Belgium, and TeliaSonera in Scandinavia. Alcatel will soon add more networks in the UK and Spain to boost its IP portfolio which already includes 70 customers in 30 countries.

Alcatel also increased its share of revenue in the MSWAN market from 21% in the first quarter to 24.8% in the second quarter, solidifying it at second place in the market, according to data from Dell’Oro.

"We are very pleased with the growth in our business lines, especially the healthy balance between the resurgent MSWAN and the growing IP Edge markets. We are now benefiting from the intersection of demand for IPTV and carrier-class business services based on IP and Ethernet -- trends we anticipated and for which we optimized our platforms," Basil Alwan, President of Alcatel's IP activities, said in a statement.
