Cisco Systems said Thursday that it has completed the acquisition of wireless switch vendor Airespace.

The acquisition surprised some industry observers when it was first announced in January because Cisco had steadfastly refused to develop switches to manage enterprise wireless LANs. However, the company said in a statement Thursday that the acquisition will enable it to "offer its customers the most innovative and comprehensive suite of WLAN solutions in the industry."

No financial details about the transaction were provided.
