Japanese Broadband Provider Testing Advanced 3G

A Japanese provider of wholesale broadband services, eAccess, and Lucent Technologies said Thursday they were testing an advanced 3G data network for possible deployment..

The W-CDMA network will use High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) technology to provide peak speeds of as high as 3.6 Mbps. Lucent is working with other carriers, including Cingular Wireless in the U.S., to deploy HSDPA.

In a statement, eAccess said it will use the trial to determine whether it will offer wireless data and voice services to its customers. Potential services will include multimedia services and providing enterprises with data access for mobile employees.

The broadband provider said it is looking ahead to the release of new wireless spectrum in Japan.
