Polycom this week announced a new enterprise-class videoconferencing platform aimed at easing the deployment of multipoint video and unified conferencing via IP networks.

The Polycom RMX 2000 is targeted at both large enterprises and service provider deployments, supporting videoconference infrastructures that support room-based systems as well extensive desktop rollouts. The RMX 2000 conferencing platform is optimized for use on IP networks and designed from the ground up to be at the center of a unified communications network. It features wizards, automated system surveillance, predefined profiles and standard Web interfaces for seamless integration into IT environments.

The system, and Polycom's entire architecture, is built to support the IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) standard, which is focused on supporting large-scale voice, data and video over a unified IP network, the vendor said.

Polycom announced its IMS plans in December, including plans to roll out a variety of IMS-architected products this year: a conferencing and collaboration optimized application server, an application development environment, an optimized conferencing media server, and multiple voice, video and unified collaboration applications.

The RMX 2000 real-time media conferencing platform supports the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) and H.323 standards for delivering on-demand real-time conferencing and collaboration services over IP networks. The platform can be deployed as a traditional conferencing resource or within a distributed IMS network environment.

The Polycom RMX 2000 real-time media conferencing platform is built on a Linux operating system and offers a standard XML API for deploying value-added or third-party conferencing applications. Security functions in the RMX 2000 platform include user authentication through an external LDAP or ActiveDirectory database, AES encryption on all ports and multiple administrative permission levels. The Polycom RMX 2000 is available now, starting at $53,000.
