Software AG Major SOA Player With WebMethods Deal

Vendor says merger will help the company expand its presence in North America and grow its sales globally

Software AG signed a deal this week to acquire WebMethods, a maker of business process integration software. WebMethods accepted Software AG's $546 million cash offer, which translates into roughly $9 per share.

The German SOA vendor said the merger will provide it with a much stronger and broader service-oriented architecture and business process management product portfolio. Software AG also expects to gain some cost savings from eliminating overlapping resources, the company said.Software AG has already publicly stated its desire to grow to become a $1.3 billion company, which will require the vendor to more than double its revenues. With the WebMethods acquisition, Software AG said it would more than double Software AG's North American customer base.

Pending regulatory approvals, the acquisition is expected to be finalized in the second quarter.
