Symbol Technologies Monday released a high-capacity wireless switch aimed at large wireless LAN deployments.

The company said its WS5100 switch is aimed at large enterprises that experience "pain points" when trying to expand their wireless LANs. The new switch is a follow-on product to the companies WS5000 enterprise switch, introduced in 2002. The new switch adds more capacity, Symbol said in a statement.

Specifically, Symbol said the WS5100 offers 10 times more throughput capacity and 60 percent broader coverage than the WS5000. It supports as many as 48 access ports, according to the company.

The switch is available now, starting at $2179 for a six-port configuration, according to the company.
