On September 10, IBM will start shipping the next iteration of the venerable mainframe, the zEnterprise System, powered by the world's fastest multiprocessor, the z196. Developed at a cost of more than $1.5 billion, the 5.2GHz z196 is a four-core chip that contains 1.4 billion transistors on a 512-square millimeter surface and incorporates Big Blue's embedded DRAM (eDRAM) technology.
